Born in the eastern European country of Bulgaria, mezzo soprano Mila Ionkova holds a Masters degree in Music from the famous Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She specialized in the oboe, playing around the world with a number of different orchestras. In 2006, she made her first appearance on stage with TrypTych’s production “The Consul”, where she performed the role of the Mother. Also in 2006, she made her solo recital debut with great success. The following years, she sang the leading role in Puccini’s Tosca, followed by Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Leonora in La Forza del Destino, Schumann’s Genoveva, Amelia in “Un Ballo in Maschera”, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Mahler Symphony 2. In the past few years Mila made her debut with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony
Orchestra in Don Giovanni, followed by Giorgetta in Puccini’s “Il Tabarro”, La Ciesca in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”, The Mother in Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors” as well as soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s “Lobgesang”.
Among her future engagements is Richard Strauss’s “Four Last Songs” with Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra in May, 2018.
Mila currently is a soloist of Opera Belcanto of York, with which company she recently performed the role of Suzuki in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”. Her future engagement with the company is the role of Amneris in Verdi’s “Aida”.
