John Holland

John Holland – Leporello

Bass-Baritone John Holland has a diverse performance career. On the opera stage, he has been praised for his Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Leporello and Masetto (Don Giovanni), Vodník (Rusalka), Purkrabi (Jakobín), Caspar (Der Freischütz), Achilla (Giulio Cesare), and Alberich (Der Ring Des Nibelungen). As an Oratorio soloist, John’s highlights include Orff’s Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation, and Bach’s St. John Passion. He has sung with the Canadian Opera Company, the Ottawa Bach Choir, The Mozarteum (Salzburg), Bachfest (Leipzig), Smetana Hall (Prague), Estates Theatre (Prague), and has shared the stage with the likes of Placido Domingo, Sherrill Milnes, and Lorin Maazel.

A respected academic, Dr. Holland completed his Musicology PhD in 2018, focused on Czech Opera, Art Song, and Choral Works. He is an alumnus of the University of Windsor, Western University, and York University. John is the founder of the Canadian Institute for Czech Music, a regular lecturer for the Canadian Opera Company’s various guilds, and a judge for the Juno Awards.
